Thomas Pleas McBride 1855 - 1925

*New* Dead End Bypassed: Important Part of the mystery solved - August 1999 *New*

Thomas (TOM) P. McBride was born in Illinois 3 March 1855. He is shown in the 1880 Texas census to be married to Julia (Holley). A family Bible indicates her maiden name may have actually been Hawthorn. Julia's parents are unknown. The story is that Julia, her sister, Charity and their mother were on there way to Texas through Arkansas when the mother suddenly died. Family lore says she drowned crossing the Red River. The girls returned to Arkansas and were taken in by different families. Julia was not happy with this arrangement and one day rode up on horseback to the place where Charity was staying and signaled for her sister to join her. Charity did and they both rode off to Texas. Julia is shown in the census to be born in Mississippi. Tom and Julia had two children which are shown in the 1880 Cherokee County, Texas census. These two children were: Willie, age 4 and Ann, age 2, both born in Texas. Family lore says that Tom married Julia in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.

Tom appears again in the 1900 Washington Co., Texas census without a wife in the house and with five (5) children, Emma, Tom, George, Minnie, and Mack (Jack) all born in Texas. In the 1900 Texas census Julia McBride is shown as being an inmate in the State Lunatic Asylum located at Austin, Texas. She was still there in the 1920 census and ended up dying there in 1932.

The 1920 Falls County, Texas census shows T.B. McBride, age 64, born in Illinois married to Artie, age 26 with two (2) children, Barney, age 5 and Mattie May, age 3 11/12. They lived on Rosebud Road in Falls County.

Tom had a stroke while picking cotton and died 27 Nov. 1925 from a ruptured blood vessel in his brain. Julia died 26 FEB. 1932 at the Texas State Asylum from third degree burns caused by a radiator. Tom and Julia are buried along with many of their descendants at the Powers Chapel Cemetery which is about eight miles east of Rosebud, Texas.

I found where George W. McBride has a headstone in Moody Cemetery, Waco, TX. While this stone contains a date of birth, it does not have a death date. George W. is actually buried at Powers Chapel Cemetery. The family may not have known George had another burial plot in Waco.

Tom P. and his second wife, Ora Arty (Dawson) McBride
were married March 22, 1910 in Clark County, Arkansas

A picture of Barney B. and his wife Verna Fay (Wright) McBride

(Children front) Barbara Charlotte McBride, Melvin Dick McBride

Mattie (Lynne) May McBride 1916 -

Jesse Viola (Pat) McBride 1919 -

    Dora (Christine) McBride 1922 -

The Death certificate for Thomas P. McBride lists his father as Litt or Lett McBride. This would seem to be an abreviation for Littleton McBride. (We now know his father was Isaac Litt McBride.)

In the Moody Cemetery, which is noted above under George W. McBride, are buried four other McBride's.

    They are:

    James N. McBride 3 Jan. 1854 - 30 Dec. 1925

    Martha C. McBride 19 Aug. 1851 - 13 Aug. 1937

    T. S. McBride Sr. 24 Oct. 1874 - 20 Mar. 1957

    W. C. McBride 18 Dec. 1876 - 13 Nov. 1905

Question: Was James N. McBride a brother of Thomas P. McBride? Uncle to George W. McBride? Was T. S. and W. C. children to James N. and Martha C. McBride?

There is a James W. McBride 1889 - 1965 buried at Powers Chapel Cemetery. Is he a son of James N. noted above in the Moody Cemetery? Nephew to Tom P. McBride and cousin to his children?
