On 9 June 1842 John 5 purchased from his brother-in-law Roadham A. Payne (of Greene County) and Lavinia, his wife, 80 acres in Polk County.
When John 4 Looney died in Greene County in 1839 and his son Isam 5 Looney applied for administration, one of the securities was John 5 Looney with William 5 Looney and John Lair). In the settlement of his estate, John 5 Looney on 1 June 1840 signed a receipt of $417.91 to Isam Looney, admin., one of $59.93 on 4 July 1843 to Sally Looney, administrator of Isam Looney, and another of $42.00 likewise to Sally Looney, all three for his interest in the estate of John Looney, deceased. The total is $519.90 (intended as $520, which 1/12 interest in the estate).
Elizabeth (Littleton) Looney, wife of John 5 Looney, died 21 July 1844 and John 5 m. (2) Samantha (Holder) Looney born ca 1818, daughter of Bledsoe Holder and widow of Benjamin 5 Looney (Isam 4, Benjamin 3, Robert 2).
John Looney and Samantha, his wife, sold to Jesse Grigsby (as did his older brother Benjamin 5 Looney) John's inherited 1/12 interest in the 200 acres of land in Greene County left by John 4 Looney. This is shown by Grigsby's deed _____ April 1850 to Joseph A. Renshaw. (Green County deeds H, p. 576.)

John 5 and wife Samantha may have left Green County soon after the sale of 10 acres to Cunningham, and further reports concerning him and his second family are meager. Dr. O. L. (E?) Looney, grandson of John 5 and Elizabeth Littleton, states that he never saw any of his father's half-brothers. John 5 went to Alabama and Texas. He died 10 January 1864 at Basin Springs, Grayson County, Texas.
The children of John 5 Looney and his wife Elizabeth (Littleton) Looney were:

Tanie LoonieJesse 5 Looney (John 4, Benjamin 3) was born 15 December 1801. His daughter Miss Pauline Looney says her father was born "near Knoxville", Tennessee, but our knowledge of John 4 Looney and his activities indicates that the family lived some miles up the Clinch River, perhaps on the 195 acres on the sout h side of Clinch that a John Looney purchased from Jas. Roberts on 1 March 1801 in Hawkins County.
With his father and brothers Jesse must have migrated southwestward, perhaps following the Tennessee River. By 1819 they were living on Indian lands, probably in what soon became Jackson County, Alabama, and Jesse signed the petition of 1819 immediately after Joseph Garrison and James Garrison and preceding his brothers Isaac 5, ABSlum 5, and Benjamin 5 Looney.
Jesse 5 married Ruby Bond on 16 March 1827 in Jackson County, Alabama. Ruby's middle name is given as Crawford in some accounts but as Crain by her daughter in 1920. Ruby was daughter of Jesse Walton Bond and Susannah (Crain) Cowan. Susannah was daughter of John Crain and Mildred Walton. Mildred was daughter of Robert Walton and Sarah Farley.

According to the Oregon Historical Quarterly, Vol. 32, p. 197, Jesse 5 went to Illinois soon after his marriage, and was in Wisconsin in 1830 before he went to Missouri. Meanwhile, Jesse's father, John 4 Looney, reached northeast Missouri by 1830 or earlier. Jesse's younger brother Isaac 5 Looney purchased land in Monroe County, Missouri, on 6 November 1828.
The earliest presently available public record of Jesse Looney in Missouri is his entry on 160 acres in Greene County 15 October 1838. He is listed in the 1840 census of Polk County: John 30/40, wife 20/30 with one boy and two girls 5/10, and two girls under five. Although enumerated in Polk County, he owned 160 acres and lived in Greene County later, and on 10 September 1841 with his wife Ruby, he sold same to Joseph McClure.
In the settlement of the estate of John Looney, Jesse 5 signed three receipts, as legatee, amounting to $437.32. (This is $82.68 less than his 1/12 interest; presumably he still owed the administrator that amount as a balance due on his purchases at the sale.)
Further search in Greene County land records should show what disposition Jesse 5 Looney made of the 16-2/3 acres which he inherited from his father's estate.
Jesse 5 Looney and wife with six children joined the first great wagon train which left Independence, Missouri, 22 May 1843. There were over 1,000 people, over 100 covered wagons, and they made their own trail for five months, reaching Waiilatpu, near Walla Walla, in Oregon Territory in October, still 250 miles east of the Willamette Valley. Five or six died on the road and there were some 8 or 10 births. (Twins were born to the Looneys on the journey but died within a few days.) He wrote an informative letter to his brother-in-law Col. John C. Bond of Monmouth, Illinois.

Jesse settled near Jefferson, Marion County, Oregon, where he died on 25 March 1869. His biography was published in The Oregonian 27 March 1869 (p. 2). Some account of the Oregon branch of the Looney family appeared in the same paper 1 August 1926 (Section 1, p. 11). See also the Oregon Historical Quarterly 27, 325; 32, 197.
Jesse brought three wagons, 14 oxen, 24 cows, also mares and a stallion. He settled in Chehulpun Valley soon called Looney Valley. He filed on a 320 acre donation claim and Ruby filed on an adjacent 320 acres. He further acquired land to a total of 4,000 acres. Mrs. Ruby Looney lived until 1900. The Oregonian states that Jesse was a cousin to President Andrew Jackson.
Jesse 5 Looney and his wife Ruby had the following children (as listed by their daughter Miss Pauline Looney in 1920):
