NOTE:
The following data accompanied documentation which was identified as Tilton's.
The originator is unknown at this time, but is assumed to be one of the persons
who worked closely with Tilton in gathering, analizing and documenting this data.
This document is identified as Adam (2) Looney draft "B"
ADAM (2) LOONEY - m. Hanna Wright
(According to tradition; some wonder if it were Rowland.)
b. ca 1725 or 1726, probably Isle of Man
d. 1770, Tyron County, North Carolina; eldest son,
Robert, administrator of estate
Adam was the fourth and last of the Looneys to be listed on the Muster
Roll of Augusta County, Va., in 1742, in Capt. George Robinson's list.
Adam moved on to Mecklenburg County, N. C., then on to Craven County,
South Carolina (Sept. 27, 1767). Must have retained some land in
Augusta County, Va., however, because on July 6, 1768, mention is made
of his corner of land there. It is possible he returned to Virginia to
live; however, he must have moved again South for on September 9, 1776,
he enlisted in the Fifth South Carolina Regiment (Adjutant General's
Office in Washington).
Another Note:
Adam Looney appeared on the Muster Roll of Augusta Co., Va., in 1742
along with brothers Thomas, Robert, Jr., and Daniel. On Nov. 17, 1752,
he purchased 221 acres at head of Meadow Run on Bryan's Creek from Col.
James Patton. On March 10, 1756, he patented a 140 acre tract on a
branch of Looney's Creek. On Oct. 2, 1765, Adam and wife, Hannah, sold
the tract on Looney's Creek to Alexander Evans from Mecklenburg Co., N. C.
Adam Looney had a grant for 100 acres on Bever's Cr., Granville Co.,
South Carolina, dated May, 1763, and he was in Craven Co., S. C., in
1767. Adam Looney died in Tyron Co. (Tryon? py - transcriber) N. C.,
in 1770, where on July 4, 1770, his eldest son, Robert Looney, was
appointed administrator of the Adam Looney estate.

JOHN (3) - b. 1754, Bedford County, Va.
m. Hannah
b.
d.
d. March 8, 1848
Born in Bedford Co., Virginia, according to his pension application
made in 1833 in Anderson District of N. C., and he lived in
Spartanburg, S. C., in Dec. 1777 when he enlisted. (Pension File No.
S.1553) He was wounded at Savannah, Ga. and as result had to have
his leg amputated in 1824. At the 1790 Census, he lived in
Abbeyville Co. 96 District, S. C., 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16,
2 females and no slaves. This John Looney died March 8, 1848, in
Picken District, S. C., leaving no widow. His estate was administered
by W. S. Grisham (General Accounting Office, Washington, D. C.)
This John Looney is probably identical with John, brother of Robert
(3) who according to a letter from George C. Looney, died at
Bachelor's Retreat, S. C. in 1850 "at the age of 119 years." The
records of Pickens, S. C. show that John Looney's wife was Hannah,
who released dower when he signed a deed. The estate of John Looney
was divided among:
Jane Looney - Probably his daughter;
Osborn and Elizabeth Manning - Probably his daughter
James Palmer and wife, Dorcas, probably his daughter
John Miller and wife, Sarah, probably his daughter
Rachel Demington, probably his daughter
Jane WAS John's daughter, and she refused to
administer his estate. Her refusal is dated from
Westminster. The above would seem that John
had no sons.

David Looney was taxable in Fayette Co., Kentucky, on
Feb. 26, 1790.

See A. G. O. file in Washington, D. C.

SARAH (3) b. 1760
ADAM, JR. (3) b. 1750 Grant of 300 a. Tyron Co., N. C. on north side
Paccolet, Nov . 1771
Enlisted 9 Sept. 1776, 5th S. C. Regt.
MOSES (3) b. 1752 Reported killed in Sullivan Co., Tenn.
He and his heirs received from the State of N. C. a grant of
640 acres. He was private in Continental Line of N. C.; killed
in service at Boundary House on border of N. C. and S. C.
It has been suggested a son may have been the James Looney, who
commanded Blackmore's Fort in Clinch Valley in Sept. 1774. James
signed a petition in Botetourt Co., Va. in 1781. On Jury in Botetourt
Co. 1783. (Tilton)
Said to have been 8 sons of Adam and Hannah Wright Looney
who fought in Revolution. According to information above, only 6 sons
are known. Possible to consider one as the James mention above. He
lived at Kings' Mills, now Kingsport, Tennessee. This note was taken
from Mr. Tilton's notes. Mr. Tilton also suggests that possibly Sarah
Looney of Lincoln Co., Ky. who married Benjamin Boston, 10/13/1787,
may have been a daughter of Adam and Hannah.
(Transciber note: This next paragraph has been scratched out with pen
or pencil and the word "delete" in the outer margins on the original draft
document. py.) The Benjamin spoken of below was the son of Robert (2)
Looney. (LWJ 1997)
Elsie Stroud says Benjamin has been suggested as son of Adam. No
records of this in Family Bible. This is thought to be the Benjamin
Looney, who made a trip into Kentucky with a cousin, Jonathan Looney,
son of Absalom and on their way home, Ben was killed by Indians at
Cumberland Gap. Land grants to Benjamin Looney in Fayette Co., Ky.,
dated 1782, and 1783, 500 acres in each tract, corresponds with the
approximate time in which the boys stopped with Michael Looney in
Stanley Valley and urged him to make the trip with them to Ky. It is
said that Daniel Boone accompanied them into Ky. I believe it has been
determined, however, that this Benjamin was a son of Robert, Jr.,
according to a Bible Record belonging to Judge Ben Looney of Texas, and
that this Benjamin married Mary Johnson, and that he was killed in
Indian War at Cumberland Gap, East Tennessee (Genealogy Clearing House).
