Robert's son, David Reasons Looney, had left Maury County, Tenn-
essee, and purchased land in Lauderdale County, Alabama, in 1836, and at
the 1840 census, lived there. In his household that time lived a male of
70 to 80 years. Did Robert(3) Looney, after the death of his wife, Rebec-
ca, go to Alabama to visit his son and die there during the late summer
of 1840?
All descendants of Robert(3) Looney are indebted to Professor Wal-
ter O. Shriner, of Terre Haute, Indiana, for most of the searches that
have permitted this sketch of his life and activities. The following re-
constructed outline of his family and descendants is the result of dis-
cussions with Dr. Shriner and others, and it considers all data present-
ly available, including census reports and personal correspondence. The

married ca. 1786, Samuel Gregg (b.Loudon County, Virginia on
16 February 1763, died 6 February 1814). In Sumner County, Tennessee,
there is record of a Power-of-attorney dated 10 August 1795, from David
Looney of Sullivan County,Tennessee, to Col. Edward Douglas to convey

David(3) Looney was born in 1777 or 1778, probably on Muddy Creek
about 2 miles north of the Holston River, in what was then considered as
Washington County, Virginia, but became Sullivan County, N.C., about 2
years later. David married in 1799,(DAR records) Jane Spurgeon(born 1779
DAR records), daughter of John Spurgeon who died in 1810 or earlier.
David(3) lived in Smith County, Tennessee. He sold land there to Jeremiah
Taylor on 11 December 1804, and was on Jury in June 1809, 1810, and 1811.
On 20 June 1810, David(3) Looney of Smith County, Tennessee, sold to Fran-
cis Findley of Lincoln County, 100 acres of Lytles Creek, part of M.C.
Grant #206, to Alexander Breckenridge and David(2) Looney,Senr. (Maury
Deeds 1).
On 20 March 1811, with brothers Abraham and Joseph, of Sullivan
County, and nephew Isaac Acuff Looney of Maury County, he signed deed to
Alexander Breckenridge of Bourbon County, Kentucky. On the next day, the
same four signed a deed of division, recorded in Maury County,
Tennessee. David(3) lived in Smith County on 27 September 1813, when he
owed $12.50 to Joel B. Harper. On the same day, he was security for Frederick
Ulhs, Administrator of the estate of William Jones, dec'd. Again in 1814, with
others in Smith County, he was security in the sum of $20,000.00, for So-
lomon DeBow and Jeremiah Taylor, Administrators of the estate of Samuel
Caruthers, dec'd. On 14 November 1814, David Looney, of Smith County and
George Webb of Sullivan County joined in a deed to Elijah Cross of Sull-
ivan County for one-third interest by each in two tracts of land in Sull-
ivan County, one of which consisted of 400 acres on Muddy Creek, the oth-
er a tract of 200 acres (George Webb probably married a sister of Jane
Spurgeon Looney).
On 8 October 1816, David(3) Looney deeded to William Lawrence 100
acres on the west side of East Fork of Goose Creek, near Jeremiah Tay-
lor's corner, and WHERE David(3) lived. He may have been about to remove
from Smith County when, on 20 March 1819, he sold to Frederick Uhles, 106
acres on East Goose Creek.

Meanwhile, during the war with Great Britain and the Creek Na-
tion, David(3) had volunteered at Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, on
20 September 1813, for three months as private in a company commanded by
Captains Robert and Bethel Allen, in the regiment of Mounted Volunteers
commanded by Colonels Coffee and Robert Allen. David(3) was honorably
discharged at Ditto's Landing in Alabama, on 25 December 1813.
At the 1820 census, David(3) is found in Springfield Township of
Randolph County, Illinois, apparently a farmer with five of the family in
agriculture. There were four girls and at least four boys, plus at least
one other male, too old to be a son. At the 1830 census, David is found
in Jackson County,Illinois, aged 50 to 70, (either should be 50-60 or
60-70!) with wife in the same age group; one boy 15-20; one boy 5-10;
one girl 20-30; one girl 10-15. (Did he remove or was a new county
created?)
Success in tracing David(3) Looney and his family in their migra-
tion to Illinois and Wisconsin, is due to DAR records and to a letter
dated 10 October 1830, at Jackson County, Illinois, written by "cousin"
Elizabeth Bradley to Captain David(4) Looney Taylor (son of Mary(3) Looney
Taylor) ).' Father had a swelling on his ankle. Mr. Bradley had returned
from Fever River in good health after three years stay, and will remain
at home. Mr. Bradley had left "your cousin Abraham" there on 30 August.
Abraham was still a bachelor and intended to remain in that country.'
Elizabeth had two girls and one boy, Eliza Jane, Cyrus Giles, and
Harriett Annis. Respects were sent to "your wife and children and aunt
and all my cousins,", etc..Fortunately, this letter was preserved and
made available to the compiler by Professor Rupert Taylor.
Elizabeth, the letter writer, was the eldest daughter of
David(3) Looney. Mr. Bradley may have been her father-in-law. Abraham,
was, of course, Elizabeth's brother, oldest son of David(3) Looney.
Jane Looney, wife of David(3) Looney, died in 1835(DAR). David(3)
was probably the oldest male, 60-70, living in the household of
Abraham(4) Looney, in Iowa County, Wisconsin, at the 1840 census; also
with Abraham(4) Looney in 1850, in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, aged 72.

On 9 October 1851, David(3) Looney, aged 74, of New Diggings, La-
Fayette County, Wisconsin, made deposition (Shullsburgh, Wisconsin) con-
cerning his service in the War of 1812, for the purpose of applying for
Bounty Land. Warrant Number 56099, for 40 acres, was issued under the Act
of 1850. David(3) Looney died in 1855 (DAR).
The reconstructed family of David(3) and Jane(Spurgeon) Looney is
estimated to be about as follows:
Abraham(4) Looney.born ca.1801. See 4th generation.
Elizabeth(4) Looney.born ca. 1802. md.___Bradley, perhaps the James
Bradley listed in Randolph County, Illinois, at the 1820 census, as
16-26, but with no family. In October 1830, her children were (per their
mother's letter of October 1830):
Eliza Jane Bradley.
Cyrus Giles Bradley.
Harriett Annis Bradley.
Son(4) Looney. born say 1804. living with parents in Randolph
County, Illinois, in 1820.
Daughter(4) Looney. born say 1806. with parents in Randolph
County, Illinois, in 1820.
John Spurgeon(4) Looney. born ca. 1808. See 4th generation.
Daughter(4) Looney. born say 1810. with parents in Randolph Co.
Illinois in 1820 and in Jackson County, Illinois in 1830.
Son(4) Looney. born say 1814. with parents in Randolph County in
1820 and Jackson County, Illinois in 1830.
Jane(4) Looney. born ca. 1818 in Illinois. Living with Abraham(4)
Looney in 1850 in LaFayette County, Wisconsin.
Robert(4) Looney. born ca. 1821. See 4th generation.
