Part 7, David (2) Looney Branch

                                -36-

        David Reasons(4) Looney, (Robert(3)), was born 13 January 1799
(tombstone, New Salem Cemetery, Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas). He
was born near Nashville, according to his daughter. His birthplace was
probably on the West Fork of Station Camp Creek, west of Gallatin, in
Sumner County, Tennessee, about 20 miles from Nashville. Robert(3)
Looney had permission in April of that year to build a mill there "where
he lived."

The writer has noticed that William Reasons was a private in the
company of Captain Moses(3) Looney, (Robert(2) Branch) that served as a
Guard to the Commissioners in setting the bounds of the Military Reserva-
tion of lands for the Officers and soldiers of the Continental Line of
North Carolina. On 12 April 1804, the Commissioners certified that Will-
iam Reasons was entitled to a benefit of 250 acres, valid 9 April 1807.
(Records by Edythe R. Whitley #5,31) Also, as above stated , Robert(3)
Looney was at the same time one of the chain carriers to the same Commis-
sioners. This is the only connection of any sort between Looney and Rea-
sons that has been noticed in the entire investigation of the Looneys. It
is therefore suggested as possible that Robert(3) Looney and William Rea-
sons were good friends of about the same age, hence the middle name of
one of Robert's sons.

In 1820, David Reasons Looney was certainly not with Robert(3)
Looney in Fayette County, Kentucky, nor has he been found with a family
of his own. It is suggested that he was in Maury County, Tennessee, with
his uncle, Abraham(3) Looney, who was listed with six males, but had only
five sons of his own at that time.

At the 1830 census of Maury County, Tennessee, David Reasons(4)
Looney was listed and apparently living very near Robert(3) Looney. David
R. and one female, both in age group 20 to 30 years(i.e. born about 1805
plus or minus 5 years), had no children at that enumeration.

                                -37-

The U.S.land office records show that David Reasons(4) Looney, on
28 October 1836, paid cash at Huntsville, Alabama, for 43.38 acres in
Lauderdale County, Alabama, also for 40.38 acres, both in Section 33,
Township 1, Range 7 West.

The Lauderdale County, Alabama, Marriage records( Book #3,178)
show that at least in February 1837, D.R.Looney was a Justice of the
Peace and married Joseph I.(?) Looney (Martin(4), John(3), Robert(2)) and
Elizabeth Lentz.

At the 1840 census of Lauderdale County, Alabama, he is listed as
D.R.Looney, age 30-40; with wife in the same age group; and one girl,5 to
10; and one boy, 0-5. With them was one male, 70 to 80 years old. As
mentioned previously in the Robert(3) sketch, this male, born about
1765, plus or minus 5 years, could be Robert(3) Looney, himself.

From descendants of David Reasons Looney it is learned that he may have
married his first wife in Tennessee, and had by her, a daughter who was
born 1830-35, and married ____Grant in Tennessee, between 1851
and 1858; also a son, James, younger than the daughter. Of course, this
is in perfect agreement with the above 1840 census of Lauderdale County.

In 1850, David R. Looney is listed in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, age
51 (born in Tennessee), with Mary Looney, 38, born in Tennessee and
James Looney, 14, born in Alabama. Apparently, the daughter married a
little earlier than the family had thought, but they
did report that David Reasons Looney had lived in Mississippi, where he
married second, about 1858, Mary Ann Fowler, the daughter of Miles
Wilburn Fowler; a woman so much younger than David that the Fowlers had
objected. He reportedly once lived at Okolona, Mississippi, where their
second child, Ada Obedience Looney, was born 17 August 1863. Descendants
knew also of the first child, Ida Elizabeth (Correction) Looney.

At the 1860 census, again in excellant agreement with the family
records and traditions, David R. Looney, 60, born Tennessee, and wife,
Mary A. Looney, age 26, born Georgia, are listed with Ida E. Looney,
born in 1859 in Mississippi.

-38-

According to family records made available by Miss Lucille Dever, David
Reasons(4) Looney and his second family removed to Honey Grove, Fan-
nin County, Texas, about 1868 or 1870. David R. Looney died about 1878,
and Mary Ann Fowler Looney and some of their younger children are buried
at New Salem Cemetery near Honey Grove. The children of David Reasons(4)
Looney and his first wife, Mary__, born about 1812, were:

                Daughter(5). born ca 1833; md.__Grant before 1850 and

-40-

Abraham(4) Looney (David(3)), was born ca 1801, possibly in Smith
County, Tennessee, where his parents lived then, or soon thereafter, on
the East Fork of Goose Creek. He removed with his parents about 1819, to
Randolph County, Illinois, where his father was listed at the 1820
census.

Abraham was "still a bachelor" in 1830 and in the "Fever River"
country (later the Galena River in northwest Illinois, and/or southwest
Wisconsin), as is known by the letter of 10 October 1830, written by his
sister, Mrs. Bradley, (see section on David(3) Looney (David(2) branch) to
their cousin, David Looney(4) Taylor. Furthermore, he "intended to remain
in that country."

Certainly in 1840, in Iowa County, Wisconsin, Abraham(4) Looney, age
30-40, is listed as head of a household in which the oldest male is
60-70, which is probably David(3) Looney. (Jane, wife of David(3), had
died in 1835. DAR) The next male, 20-30, too old for a son to Abraham(4)
who was a bachelor in 1830) may be Robert Looney, a brother. The oldest
female was 20-30, probably Hulda (Bean) Looney, wife of Abraham(4) Looney,
(DAR). Three boys were under 5; one girl was 5-10; and one under 5.

In the 1850 census of LaFayette County, Wisconsin, Town of New
Diggins, District #5, on 25 September 1850, is listed Abraham(4) Looney,
49, farmer, real estate $6,000.00; born Tennessee;  no wife, apparently;
and the children seem to be Isabel, 14; Henry,12; James,11; and Abraham,
9. Then is listed in the same household David Looney, age 72, born in
North Carolina. Among others in the household is Jane Looney, age 32,
born in Illinois, who was probably a sister to Abraham(4).

Among the children of Abraham(4) and his wife, Hulda Bean Looney
were these:
Isabel(5) Looney. born Wisconsin, ca 1836.
Henry(5) Looney. born Wisconsin, ca 1838.
James(5) Looney. born Wisconsin, ca 1839.
Abraham(5) Looney. born Wisconsin, ca 1841. See 5th gener-
                        ation.
(County Records and censuses of 1860 and 1870 should be useful for ampli-
fication.)
