Part 7, David (2) Looney Branch

-46-

David(4) Looney (Abraham(3)), was born 12 May 1808, in Sullivan
County, Tennessee, where he lived as a boy until he removed with his pa-
rents about 1818 to 1820. (This is emphasized here because it has been
said that David was a native of Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, where-
as, the "Common Prayer Book" of a cousin contains a note to the effect
that the family of Abraham(3) left Rogersville July 2, 1825. See sketch
of Abraham(3) Looney in the foregoing. Perhaps the Prayer book date is
read in error for 1820, because Abraham(3) was in Maury County with his
family, including David(4), at the 1820 census.)

David(4) has not been satisfactorily located in 1830, unless he
is the David R.Looney in Maury County, age 20-30, with wife in the same
age group and no children. (If so, that is the only time a middle initial
has been found in his name. The entry has already been assigned as that
of David Reasons(4) Looney, the son of Robert(3). See that sketch)

In 1838, he was perhaps associated with his father, Abraham(3) and
his next younger brother, Richard G.(4) Looney (and perhaps, George
G.(4) Looney) in some manufacturing project in Wayne County, Tennessee.
(See sketch of George G. Looney)

At the 1840 census of Maury County, David(4) is listed as 30-40, with
wife, 20-30; ___boys and one girl were under 5; one boy was 5-10; also
seven slaves. (This was probably part of the family by the first wife.
It seems unlikely that he was the David R. Looney who was married
in 1830, at the census enumeration.)

David(4) Looney md. 1st: Mary McGuire, daughter of Patrick McGuire of
Maury County. They had at least one daughter:

Elizabeth Anise(5) Looney. md Charles F. Sanford.
David(4) md. 2nd: Mary Rowland and they had at least:
                Kate A.(5) Looney.
                Mary(5) Looney. md ____Burbank.
                Dora(5) Looney. md.____Nellis. had a son:
                        Robert Looney(6) Nellis.

                                -47-

All of them lived in New York City. The 1840 census of Maury County,
Tennessee, shows that there were other children, probably the
ones of the first marriage.

Colonel David(4) Looney was a merchant and lawyer of Columbia,&
Memphis, Tennessee, and Louisville, Kentucky, who, after the Civil War,
made his home in New York City. It has been said that he was one of the
most eloquent men of his time and a very successful business man. He died
in Memphis, Tennessee, on 10 August, 1874.

Richard G.(4) Looney (Abraham(3)), was born ca 1810, in Sullivan
County, Tennessee, and by 1820, was living with his parents in Maury
County, Tennessee. This man has not been located in 1830. He married 18
January 1832, Eliza Thomas Caruthers. She was born 12 October 1813, the
daughter of Robert Caruthers (born 1791), and Elizabeth Brown (Porter)
Caruthers (born 1 July 1795), who were married 9 July 1812, at Columbia,
Tennessee. They had at least one son:

                Robert Abraham(5) Looney. born 31 January 1837.

Jane(4) Looney (Abraham(3)) was born say 1812 in Sullivan County,
Tennessee, and by 1820, was living with her parents in Maury County. She
was also there with them in 1830. Jane Looney married Parry Washington
Porter (born ca 1803 in Davidson County, Tennessee), the son of Joseph(2)
B. Porter (Reese(1)).

In 1853, Parry W. Porter was living in Memphis, Tennessee, and had just
sold a patent right for $175,000. They had , at least, a daughter:

Elizabeth(5) Porter, who married her cousin, Elias H. Por-
ter, of Memphis, Tennessee and who had:
Elias H.(6) Porter, also of Memphis.
                                .....

George G.(4) Looney (Abraham(3)), was born say 1810, in Sullivan
County, Tennessee, where his parents lived. No record of him is available
to the compiler previous to the 1840 census. At that time, he was in
Wayne County, Tennessee, aged 20-30 years, with wife in the same age
group, but with no children. In this county in 1838, thee are recorded
some trust deeds on negroes by Abraham Looney to the Planters Bank of
Tennessee in which there is mention of R.G.Looney and David Looney (per-
haps Abraham(3) Looney and his sons Richard G. and David were associated
in manufacturing in Waynesboro at that time and Abraham(3) may have been
found there by the census taker even if he still maintained his home in
Columbia, Maury County.)

It is reported that George G. Looney married Rose Ann Allen, the
daughter of Jesse Allen and Hannah Hampton, and widow of Coxen C.
deLoach; also brother of Thomas Hampton Allen, who died in 1895, in Mem-
phis, Tennessee. ( See Genealogy and History items #6843, #7134, #7461,
#11683, and # 12051.) Speer said that George G. Looney died young.
Judge Dillahunty said he did not live past middle life. Reverend William J.
Gammon said he removed to Alabama or Mississippi. Jesse Allen died 15
July, 1857, in Memphis. Coxen (Cockson) DeLoach had a brother, Joshua,
who lived in Memphis.

                                .....

                                -49-

Colonel Abraham McClelland(4) Looney (Abraham(3)), was born 19
December 1820, in Columbia, Maury County,Tennessee, where he married and
lived. He died at his home, "Elm Spring", near Columbia, in December 1904.

At the 1830 census, he was living with his parents. His mother died in
1838, and his father was enumerated in 1840, in Wayne County, without a
family. Where Abraham M.(4) Looney lived in 1840 has not been
ascertained by anyone participating in the searches made for this Looney
family history.

Colonel Abraham(4) Looney married 27 November 1844, Susan K. Todd, born
ca 1825 per the 1830 census or 1822 per DAR records, in North Caro-
lina. She was the daughter of Christoper and Sarah Todd of Maury County.
She predeceased him about 18 years.

At the 1850 census, Abraham(4) declared his property estimated at
$50,000.00 . He was an eloquent ,persuasive orator and a profound
lawyer, often a member of the Tennessee State Senate.

He was graduated from Jackson College in Maury County, in 1839, and was
admitted to the bar in 1840, in Smith County. He moved to Memphis
in 1843 for two years, then back to Maury County. He was a Major of
Manye's First Tennessee Regiment, in West Virginia, under General Robert
E. Lee, and later, a Major-General, participating in numerous battles.

Whitson, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 1885.)
