- W.O.4- ARTIFICIAL SUBTERANNE- Water Regions of the Southwest USA CD - Enigmatic third solo release (c. 1997) from Paul Guilford/Lacosta. For nearly ten years, current New Zealander Paul Guilford was an unsung but important and mysterious presence in the Texas experimental music scene, performing first with infrequent improvisational assemblages and settling down semi-permanently in 1994 as half of the DaveDovePaul Duo, whose wide-ranging electroacoustic improvisation was captured on their excellent 1995 CD A. Guilford has (seemingly singlehandedly) rescued the bass-triggered synthesiser from guitar-geek hell, rewriting the rule book for this much-maligned instrument via extreme signal processing and a fearless curiousity for unknowable sonic terrain. Recorded as an 'ambient' exercise in producing natural sound by completely mechanical means, Water Regions is also a topographical study of a buried aquatic underworld, from trickling fissures in monolithic granite to mirrored pools spilling out in vaulted cavernous space. Or to render it concretely: Four long tracks of layered stereophonic synthesised sound. Or anecdotally: long ago upon walking into Paul’s studio upon playback, I thought I was hearing the freeway construction out back-until the microbial diamond drills began their synesthetic flashing beneath my eyelids. And to sum it up- completely transportational. $12 POSTPAID
- W.O.5- CHARALAMBIDES- s/t CD-SOLD OUT
- W.O.6- CHRISTINA CARTER- Bastard Wing LP- solo recordings: piano, guitar, voice, bells. To be released on Eclipse Records. CD CANCELLED- LP FORTHCOMING
- W.O.7- CHARALAMBIDES- Internal Eternal CD- unamplified electric hollowbody & acoustic guitars, recorded direct to DAT (via reverb pedal) 12/24/95. SOLD OUT
W.O.8- SCORCES- s/t CD- Duo improvisations recorded in 1996 by Christina (Charalambides) and Heather (Ash Castles On the Ghost Coast), while Tom, Shawn, and Jason left the building. These recordings exhibited an audacity and electrically charged mass that proved difficult to ignore, though they were buried for years (whether deemed 'improper' or 'unfitting' is no longer necessary to speculate). The tapes were recently unearthed and re-edited/reprocessed to thicken the ions of the dense aural fog evoked therein, and the final product not only drew the starting line for the duo's current performances but also revealed new possibilities and directions for Charalambides. Two long tracks for two chord organs, voices, and bells; minutely mapped to the rhythms of breath, ultimately seizing the limits of non-verbal mammal expression. Enveloping and saturating. $12.00 POSTPAID

- W.O. 9- SHAWN McMILLEN- Catfish CD- Long awaited solo CD from Shawn, and his first release (besides 2 Iron Kite CDRs) since the premature dissapearance of Ash Castles on the Ghost Coast. Humming guitar & synth modalities and bowed/scraped/struck surfaces of all kinds combine into a highly personal soundtrack for a dreamed existence. FORTHCOMING, AUTUMN 2002

CHARALAMBIDES- Ana/Kata 10 in. EP (Beta-Lactam Rine Records)- “Part 9 in the Lactamase series. The great sovereign state of Texas is great for a number of reasons; principally: beers, steers and Charalambides. Now if it's true what they say about quiet being the new loud 'n all, then this record is a screamer! Two long tracks that trade in the currency of stratosphere. The C-Bides have ever been purveyors of the sublime indescribable, but this release in particular sounds like the distant decayed echoes of supernovas. ‘Ana’ rings out with phased vocals that dance within quartertones of eachother. This serves as an extended intro to the then spacious guitar double helixes which wrap and waver as if slowly swimming through plasma. This captures something of the aural space that Musique Concrete's ‘Bringing Up Baby’ did, except that our C-Bides tread ever lightly with their annebriated walking noise lines (could they be the Leroy Vinegars of difficult music?). I've heard the term ‘moodcore’ bandied about in relation to our fair Texans, but I prefer to think of this as ‘sinewcore’ because of its dangling fleshy goodness. ‘Kata’ continues exploring the sonic themes as promulgated in the first piece, sounding more and more like lost soundtrack material to a Maya Deren film. A smokey and subtle record that is audibly fragrant both in the early morning and in the deepest corner of night. While you are ill advised to mess with Texas, you will do very well to mess with this 10 in. as it shall surreally lull you into a great sovereign state of mind.” -from Beta Lactam Ring catalog. $12 POSTPAID (media mail, add 2.00 for priority shipping)
International orders add $2.00 for first CD, $1.00 per additional CD
