Taking Your Scanner To The Beach!

I've been going to Ocean City, MD nearly every weekend for years. Love the fishing down there! Recently I've decided to take a scanner (or two) with me on my fishing trips. It can provide for some fun and entertainment for the times when the fish aren't biting (I do a lot of surf-fishing and we have good days, and bad days!). If you're into fishing you can take a bank or two on your scanner and program some marine freqs into it. In the mornings you'll hear the boats talking about their catches. I've learned many times where to go and catch some fish. For those wanting a good list of marine freqs CLICK HERE.

If listening to boaters chit-chatting all day isn't your thing, then how about listening to the U.S. Coast Guard? Or if you don't have the room in your scanner for all the marine freqs, just put in these few which are used all the time by the Coast Guard. In Ocean City these freqs are very active!

156.800 International Distress, Safety and Calling. You'll hear a lot of activity here! Not a day will go by in Ocean City MD without hearing of a boater needing help.
157.050, 157.100, 157.150, and 157.175 are used by the Coast Guard (boat, helo's, and planes) during operations. If a boater calls in a need for help on 156.800, the CG will then have him move to one of the above freqs.

Now of course there are always other things to listen to at the shore. This will depend on where you go. For the rest of this artical I'm going to stick with the Ocean City, MD area. Several years ago Ocean City switch over the public safety radios to a General Electric - Ericsson EDACS 800MHz Trunking system. They have two 800 MHz towers. The main tower with 11 repearts is located in Berlin, MD just off Rt.90 and Rt. 589. Their backup tower with 3 repearts is located in the Public Safety Building at 65th St. As of May 9th, 1999 they are still simulcasting the police dispatch channel on 460.425MHz and fire/EMS dispatch is being simulcast on 158.895 MHz. Fire Ground is being simulcast on 154.085 MHz. State police Helo-Medevac is simulcast on 154.025 MHz. These freqs provide a lot to listen too. I have a page with the complete listing of Ocean City, MD freqs including the trunking frequencies. The county fire departments are still using VHF frequencies. 46.32, 46.36, 46.38, 46.40, and 46.44 get quite a bit of use.

Have fun and happy scanning.
