Singer 401
One of Barbara's favorite machines

This is the Singer 401-G which we purchased in Germany in 1960; For those of you who are familiar with the 401's you will notice the different extension bed with little drawers for the attachments. It also has a top wind bobbin with automatic shut-off, and the extra thread take up lever like the 503. This machine was ordered with an export motor for US use, but came with a manual totally in German. They obtained an English copy however, and but wanted the German one back. This machine is now in the collection of daughter Sharon .

This is the more familiar 401A made in Anderson, South Carolina. Note the difference in the bobbin winder and the thread takeup area.
