Special Agents hold Grade Crossing
Collision Investigation Course

By Dennis Mitchell

Special Agents Carl Zerweck and Winston Johnson teamed up with other Union Pacific employees to put on a Grade Crossing Collision Investigation Course for Mansfield Policemen and Firemen.

Locomotive Engineer Dennis Mitchell assisted with an Operation Lifesaver presentation.

On the first day, the attendees were shown visual aids and VCR tapes and a variety of wopics were discussed. Among the topics, was "When is a High rail vehicle a train and when is it a motor vehicle?" The answer: When the rail wheels are down on the rail, it is a train. When the wheels are up and the truck is being driven down the road, it is a motor vehicle.

On Day 2, a static display was set up in the old Southern Pacific Yard on Broadway Street, with a Kline truck, a boxcar, a tank car and a locomotive. Butch MuCulland described the locomotive and its lead-acid batteries and 3000 to 4000 gallons of Diesel fuel as the dangerous parts of the locomotive. He showed the firemen how to safely shut down the locomotive and how to set the hand brake.
