A letter from Drew Vialpando

I would like to thank all employees working in the Dallas Miller, Ennis, Carrolton and Sherman Area for working safe all year. We did not have a personal injury all year. Great Job!
Each employee has certain responsibilities in the safety process. The purpose of defining these responsibilities is to remind employees that railroading is a dangerous environment. To minimize the risks involved in day to day operations, employees have certain responsibilities to avoid injuries. They are:
BE AWARE OF RISKS
Over 80% of injuries are caused by some type of unsafe act. This is usually related to performing an activity that is done day-in-and day-out. These acts can also be defined as within the control of the employee.
PLAN TASKS TO AVOID INJURY
Employees are responsible for understanding risks and planning their work by discussing hazards and conditions in their job briefing BEFORE stepping out the door, AND as conditions change.
CHECK EQUIPMENT AND CONDITIONS
Equipment and conditions should be checked before they are used. Examples: hand brakes, switches, toe paths, ladders, ground conditions. Defective equipment or conditions should be immediately corrected or reported. Defects should be found before an injury can occur.
STAY WITHIN YOUR PERSONAL LIMITATIONS
Many well intentioned employees are injured by straining beyond their normal capacities. Identify your capacity and stay within it. Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's one of your job responsibilities. Nothing is worth the rick of injury.
WORK WITHIN THE RULES
Safety comes first and production right behind. All decisions should be made with the understanding that rules compliance is expected. Don't assume production questions mean someone wants you to violate the rules.
"Remember Safety is your responsibility."
Thank you once again for a great year of safety! Hope you and your family's have a safe holiday season.
