Annual U.P. - Cub Scout Poster Contest

By Dennis Mitchell

UP Superintentend Joe Whalen Thanks Cubs for their interest in Operation Lifesaver. In railroad terminology a good meet occurrs when two trains arrive at a predetermined location at the scheduled time.

This meet was planned last November between the Union Pacific, The Longhorn Council Advancement Committeee and the Cub Scouts of the Longhorn Council.

This meet was a poster contest that would convey a message of safety awareness throughout the council. The contest began on January 1 and ended February 28, 1997.

As the posters were turned in to the Service Center, Jeanette Reynolds passed out the participation patches that rewarded the hard work of each Cub Scout. The posters were separated into four categories: Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos.

Early in the first week of March, letters were sent to the winners to be present on Saturday, March 8 at 10 A.M. As they arrived, at the Scout Office, they were greeted by Dennis Mitchell and presented wtih Locomotive Engineer's hats. Then the Superindent and and his staff announced the winners and awarded the prizes.

This concludes the fifth year on our Operation Lifesaver Poster contest. The first contest was held in 1993. Over 10,000 posters have been produced by Cub Scouts from the Longhorn Council. An average 20 percent of the Cubs enter. There were over 2000 posters each year.

The nice thing obout these 2000 participants in Operation Lifesaver is that they were folks who wanted to hear what we have to say.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the leaders, parents, Cub Scouts and Superintendent Joe Whalen and other Union Pacific Employees who have made this event such a huge success.
