Rules of the Way

By Eddie Exum

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 28, the Annual Denison Softball Tournament was held. I am a member of "The Loose Cannons." It is a local team and we play when we have enough people sign up so we can join a league.

We came in second place after beating the third place team twice by narrow margins. Great going, guys (and the women who supported us.)

The following comments are my viewpoints and reflect only as to how I see things:
The tournament was organized to be a family day tournament for Union Pacific employees, family and friends.

The First Place Team did have UP employees for a portion of the team, but the team's skills far outranked the skill of the average team that has only a few players who can hit a home run. This team could hit them at will. No other team could compete with them.

There must be in the future for this individual to support, play, organize or attend, the reinstatement of the "One home run rule" in this open tournament (One home run per game, all other over the fence balls are outs.)

This is Slow Pitch Softball -- a fielders' and batters' game. There's no game with no fielding.

Mesquite Construction continues to make advancements, The so-called "West Wye" will be finished for the unloading of construction materials by June 11 if there is no more rain to slow efforts.

The news is out. Effective July 1, I will be working as an ARSA Supervisor for Director of Construction Stan Hanquist. My duties will be over-seeing the meeting of UP Track Standards for contractors performing service for the Union Pacific. There also could possibly be some safety related duties. The primary territory will be DFW, San Antonio and other non-defined points. Oh Boy!

We took our granddaughter, Taylor, to the coast at Galveston during the latter part of June. We had a great time. She has it down, "I'm hungry; I'm sleepy." She said, "I wanna go to the beach," at least twice a day. Taylor is three-years-old, and will be four on July 31.

Safety Wise:

The kids will be back in school before the next issue of CROSSROADS is out -- Watch for those School Zones.

Eddie is track inspector at Mesquite Intermodal Facility.
