Offering Laboratory, Production and Consulting Services

2203.GIF (324 bytes) Who are we?

    • We offer private consulting and hands-on services in three broad areas:

      1.  Industrial and laboratory biotechnology WITH DEMONSTRATED COMMERCIAL SUCCESS!

      • From
        • Discovery,
      • Through...
        • Development...
        • Pilot plant, and...
        • Commercialization, especially:
      • Rapid screening and assay development (you've got to find what you are looking for first)
      • Bioprocessing,
      • Biocatalysis and...
      • Preparative biotransformations (read: immobilized enzyme and immobilized biocatalyst applications to make your product), on any scale,
      • Engineering coordination (i.e., we can get the thing built if it goes commercial!) as well as...
      • Biochemistry and proteomics

    2.  Environmental and regulatory compliance;

    3.  Continuous bioprocesses and applied engineering for
                Immobilized enzyme processes
Treatment of hazardous waste, especially those using microbial fixed film reactors,
  • We are especially valuable when you need a long-term resource to reliably address specific needs so that you may efficiently address other pressing issues.
  • We can review your processes and procedures, or just to get things moving faster, on an as-needed basis.
  • We are especially adept at developing new techniques and methods to make your work more precise and efficient.
  • We operate with low overhead through the use of associates. Through this approach we have engineering services at your disposal.

2203.GIF (324 bytes) Where are we

We are located in unincorporated Cook County in the Township of Palatine (Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, USA).  We are conveniently located near interstate highways I-290, I-294, I-90 and I-355, and Illinois Routes 53 and 62.  We are just 20 minutes from O'Hare Airport, the busiest airport in the world (usually!) and 45 minutes from the Chicago Loop (downtown; traffic permitting).

2203.GIF (324 bytes) How may you contact us?

2203.GIF (324 bytes) Whom do we serve?

We have been independently serving industrial customers throughout the world since 1995 (and in industry since 1978).  We have clients in the Chicago area (Chicagoland, Illinois) and other parts of the United States (Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, etc.), the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan, R.O.C. (Republic of China).  Our customers range in size from small companies with as few as 20 employees, all the way up to large corporations of many thousands of employees and governmental agencies.  We have served customers in industries involved with biotechnology (bioprocessing, pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical intermediates, synthetic organic, food and other applications), food (meat packing, vegetable processing, fruit juice bottling, commercial baking, prepared foods, corn wet milling), cold storage, transportation and trucking, warehousing, chemicals and petrochemicals, petroleum refining, wood treating, and metals (especially hexavalent chromium).

2203.GIF (324 bytes) What are some examples?

Our expertise in enzyme immobilization, bioprocessing, biotransformations and applied enzymology (especially continuous biocatalytic processes, as well as enzyme/protein purification), biochemistry, and analytical method development is applied to solving a number of problems involving biocatalytic production of optically active (enantiomerically pure) intermediates and end-products for the pharmaceutical industry.

Important Announcement: Immediately available

EC 3.1.1.1
Accepted name: carboxylesterase
CAS No. 9016-18-6
Reaction: a carboxylic ester + H2O = an alcohol + a carboxylate

Pig (Porcine) liver esterase, PLE, available both as the ammonium sulfate suspension and immobilized on Eupergit (Im PLE).
Multi-kilogram (drum-scale) quantities are available for immediate shipment.

Call immediately while supplies last!!!

Other immobilized enzymes prepared upon request

1-847-925-8524 (USA)

We recently completed a major project involving development and scale-up of an immobilized pig liver esterase process at the metric ton level.  This ImPLE was used in the steriospecific hydrolysis of a pharmaceutical intermediate (see above link).

Another recent project involved optimization of a protein-to-polysaccharide conjugation step involved in vaccine production.

We have extensive experience with practical application of immobilized enzymes and cells used in continuous processes.  When microorganisms are used they are employed as either fixed-films or stabilized whole cells.  The reactors we have successfully used in commercial applications are packed-bed, CSTR, sequencing batch and fluidized bed.  We are also quite adept at enzyme/protein purification.

We also have significant expertise in private industrial consulting services in a number of  regulatory areas.  We have helped numerous clients comply with EPA & OSHA regulations [including Process Safety Management (PSM), Risk Management Planning (RMP), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know (EPCRA)] as well as FDA food safety issues.  In the regulatory and safety areas our customers are mostly in the chemical, petroleum and food industries but we also have customers in the metal industry.  We have aided customers with our considerable experience in regulations relating to hazardous chemicals.

In the pretreatment and biological treatment area our customers are mostly in the chemical and petroleum industries.  We have successfully demonstrated and applied pre-treatment of effluent and air emissions, and cleaning up of contaminated groundwater (biological waste treatment; bioremediation, all media: aqueous, air, soil).  Microbiological approaches are our specialty, but we can help you with all other aspects of the waste treatment process.

2203.GIF (324 bytes) Engineering, chemistry, analysis & reference materials

Among our strategic partners are chemists as well as chemical engineers.   Individually, or as a team, we can help you with many problems and projects, even those outside of the Regulatory and Environmental areas.  We can fabricate customized equipment.  Just let us know your needs and we will make every effort to satisfy them, and you.

We have extensive experience in analysis and analytical chemistry in both the biochemical and environmental areas.  We can handle all of your analytical needs.

We have a number of pages on books of interest to the science, technology and engineering professionals.  You can order them directly though our web pages.

The company's principal, Dr. Louis DeFilippi, (see Statement of Qualifications) is also the editor of the classical John Wiley text, "Biological Treatment of Hazardous Wastes."   You can view information on the book, including an expanded table of contents (with extensive links) and a number of reviews by accessing our web page.  Click here.   Or, your may go directly to Amazon.com and order the book.  Click here

2203.GIF (324 bytes) And, last but not least, our charter (you know, this used to be called business philosophy!)

In the not-too-distant past I had an interesting conversation with the General Manager of a small biotech firm.  He was a "graduate" of a particular consulting firm well know for its approach to ruthlessly cutting costs, mostly by lopping off personnel, regardless of their contribution to the firm.  I was told that the most important thing in business is CASH FLOW.  Everything else is secondary.

I bit my tongue.   Sorry all you MBAs out there, but you are wrong.  The most important thing in business is not cash flow.  It is THE CUSTOMER.  This is followed by such old-fashioned things as giving the customer what he/she wants, completing the project on time, delivering to the customer what was promised, and of the quality needed, and giving the customer that little extra effort, such as guiding them in a direction that will benefit them, and giving them an HONEST opinion.  And, by the way, not despoiling the environment while you achieve your goals.

From this cash flow, the dependent variable, will follow.  It will never lead.

All of that other stuff "to be the best in the business, etc." is just fluff.

So, if you want to work with a firm for which the most important thing in doing business their own cash flow, or if their motto is "we cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you", please call someone else.

But, if you want things done right, and the goods delivered as promised, you may contact us at:
