Carrigaholt is a fishing village with 6 pubs (with music, dance, & billiards), restaurants, church, school, police station; the 15th-century Carrigaholt Castle; and Dolphinwatch excursions from the new pier. O'Curry College is an Irish language college located 1-1/2 miles south of the village. Carrigaholt Castle is set on the verge of a cliff overlooking the Shannon Estuary and Carrigaholt pier. It is a tall, well-preserved 5-storey tower house standing in one corner of a bawn and was built around the end of the fifteenth century by the MacMahons, chiefs of the Corcabascin Peninsula. There is a nice two-mile walk south of the village of Carrigaholt past the Irish (Gaelic) College to a shipwreck. At low tide you can see the steel poles of the ship. The captain ran it on the rocks in 1945 for insurance purposes. It is called the "Okeanos." If you mention that to anyone in the village they will point the way.

Kilkee Beach Kilkee is one of Ireland's foremost tourist centres ten minutes to the north; offering swimming, boating, scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing, horse riding, hotels, and WaterWorld. It's golden beach stretches for one mile in a semi-circular sweep and slopes gently into the bay. It is renowned as the safest bathing beach on the west coast of Ireland. Kilkee is for walker's too. The walk along the coastline to the Diamond Rocks is one of the most breathtaking and exhilarating in the world! Kilkee provides a welcome haven for the tourist. There are a number of top quality restaurants where one can enjoy both International and local cuisine and in particular fresh fish, lobster and crayfish literally plucked out of the unpolluted Atlantic Ocean.

Kilrush is the capital of West Clare and is 16 miles to the north. Kilrush as a town was planned and owned by the Vandelour family in the 18th century. In its heyday during the late nineteenth century Kilrush was a busy trading post. Steamers from Limerick linked with the West Clare Railway to bring passengers to the seaside town of Kilkee. The Market House is now the town hall. Today Kilrush is a pleasant market town on the Shannon Estuary. It has an excellent modern marina offering sailing, windsurfing, canoe/kayaking lessons from a protected marina. Also available locally: horse riding, pitch & putt, visits to Scattery Island, Dolphin Watching, and bicycle hire.

West Clare is known as the land of the welcomes and is an ideal base for a golf holiday in Ireland being within easy reach of famous courses such as Lahinch, Ballybunion and Killarney; and lesser known, but still challenging courses in Kilkee and Kilrush.

Places of interest near Lisheen House include:
The Little Ark  This is located in the village church of Kilbaha which is almost at the outer most tip of West Clare (about 8-10 miles west of the house). Years ago when the celebration of mass was forbidden, the locals built the Ark and when the tide was out, brought it to the beach, where the priest celebrated Mass from the inside, with the people outside surrounding the ark.  The beach was considered "no man's land," meaning that interruption of the celebration could not occur.

Be sure to see Loop Head Lighthouse (you will only be 2-3 miles from it when you visit the village of Kilbaha) and walk around back to the Atlantic Ocean. As you look west the next stop would be Newfoundland. It is quiet, rugged, wild, with a real sense of peace, even with the waves crashing against the rocks.
