The Model BEP 0 is a key element in HPM's "Systems Concept" . It is a microcontroller-based system that provides the ability to run more than one (up to eight) different HPM family modules through a single simple serial port interface to the measurement system's host computer. It functions as an intelligent communications manager and "module server". In operation, it determines which modules are connected to specific ports so that there is no way to make wrong connections.

The BEP 0 also manages and distributes power supplied to each BEP module, allowing only a single power unit to be used in a BEP 0 module cluster and eliminating cables. It also enables a single host computer to be used to control all test administration in such a cluster; benefits of standardization and commensurate simplification across a wide range of tests are achieved.
