The Model
BEP XI is a multi-function
system designed to acquire standardized measures of the speech
production and hearing subsystems. It consists of: 1) HPM's proprietary
"BEP for Windows" software* that runs on a user-supplied
"host computer" and allows the user to focus on the
test subject, not the ancillary tasks of measurement; 2) a compact
high speed data acquistion, control, and processing unit that
interfaces to the host computer through a simple serial port
connection;
3) a "standardized", head-mounted microphone; 4) a "standardized"
headphone set; 5) a compact power supply; and 6) a step by step
manual for easy set-up and use. This compact and unobtrusive test
instrument is positioned on a table in front of the subject. For
speech tests, this precision instrument generates stimuli (visual
and acoustic) and processes acoustic information from the microphone.
Carefully selected short tasks permit isolation of many subsystems
within the speech production system and allows rapid documentation
of elemental and higher level performance capacities important
to the execution of higher level speech tasks. During most measurement
procedures, detection of the start and completion (for timed tests)
of the test/data acquisition are automated for objectivity and
accuracy. Record and playback tape deck interfaces are provided.
The module also provides computer controlled acoustical stimuli
to a headset for hearing performance tests.
