The Model BEP IV is a complete, stand alone instrument for efficient quantification of performance capacities and for rehabilitation/training in postural stability tasks. The BEP IV system consists of: 1) HPM's proprietary "BEP for Windows" software that runs on a user-supplied "host computer" and allows the user to focus on the test subject, not the ancillary tasks of measurement; 2) a compact, lightweight and rugged "balance platform" (the BEP IV module) that interfaces to the host computer through a simple serial port connection; 3) a compact power supply; and 4) a step by step manual for easy set-up and with detailed instructions for each test procedure. The microprocessor-based BEP IV module has high precision, self-calibrating sensing subsystems that accurately sense movement of the center of pressure along two axes in the plane of the platform. Postural stability measures are acquired under different standardized conditions (bilateral support, right or left unilateral support, eyes open or closed) during automatically timed trials. Time series data is processed in real time to compute single number medial-lateral, anterior-posterior, and total (composite of M-L and A-P performance) measures in readily interpretable units of percent stability. Body weight can also be quickly and accurately measured and integrated with other measures.
