His name is born on the rolls to March l, 1780 with "Expiration of service March 17--." James Allen was one of the incorporator and trustees of Hampden, Sidney Collage, May 1783 in Prince Edward County, Virginia along with Reeds Patriots, Patrick Henry, William Cabell, Paul Carrington, James Madison, Evernal Meads, as trustee, he was empowered to elect the professors of the college, "who would preserve in the minds of the students that sacred love and attachment which they should hear to the principals of the present glorious Revolutions" and was instructed that no one should be elected unless the tenor of his conduct shall reveal to the world his sincere affections for the livery and independence of the United States of America. James and Elizabeth Allen moved westward from Hanover Co., Va. in the 1750s. Most sources give Ingleside as his home, but the existing Ingleside on Rt. 460 Ease of Farmville was not his home. This house was built by James' brother, Charles, for his son, James Richardson Allen. Three other sons of James and Ann Anderson settled in Coumberland Co., Va. Benjamin, Richard and Daniel. The fifth son, Charles settled in Prince Edward Do. near Farmville at Dover Plantation. James was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church along with a number of his children and brothers. It was founded in 1754 Parents: James I Allen and Anne Anderson. He was married to Elizabeth Sims in 1749.
