Barried 10 Jan. 1902 in Deenan Cemetery, Farmer's Branch, Texas. Andrew Jackson Colwell was born in Alabama May 3, 1820. He was the 6th child of William and Maria (Mary) Colwell. When Andrew was still a baby, the family moved to Tennessee, where four more children were born before the family moved with a group of neighbors to the Mexican State of Texas. Stories had reached them about large free grants of land that was fertile and beautiful. Thus, they decided to leave the protection and rights that their ancestors had fought for, leave the United States of America and go to a foreign country. Their grant was issued in Spanish stating that there were eleven membors in the family. Two of the older boys came later. When the Mexican government took a census in 1835, Andrew Jackson was listed as 14 years of age. On Jan. 7. 1850, he married Nancy Harriet Hughes in Angelina County. Nancy was born in Louisiana June 30, 1834, and her family moved to Texas soon afterward. Twelve children were born to them, but three died very young. Four sons and five daughters married and had families. They were l. Wiley, b. Sept. 21, 1850, died Oct. 2, 1850. 2. Mary J. b. Nov. 7, 1852, died young. 3. Feb. 23, 1873, died Oct. 28, 1910. 12. Joan Margaret born July 3, 1875, died March 19, 1952, at Fort Worth, Texas. In 1870 the Andrew Jackson family was living in Tarrant County, Texas. In 1879 he bought three hundred and nineteen acres in Dallas County , Texas on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. This location was known as the Hackberry Community. Six generations of Colwell families have lived on the Dallas County property during their 103 years of ownership. In 1982 the land was sold to Las Colinas Corporation, who developed a business and industrial city within a city at Irving, Texas. The Exxon Company recently purchased 132 acres on Colwell Boulevard for the new location of their world headquarters. Andrew and Nancy celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary Jan 7, 1900. Andrew died two years later on Jan. 10, 1902, and was buried in the Deenan Cemetery at Farmers Branch. Nancy, with her son Wiley, moved to California and was buried at Long Beach, Calif. for Texas. They arrived in the Mexican owned state in 1835 and were given one-quarter league of land on the Atoyac (pronaunced Tow-ee-ack) River. The county is not known. Unhappy, the family moved to the area of Zavalla, Angelina County, Texas. They have many decendants in Angelina County, Texas. William and Maria (Mary) Colwell were both fifty (50) years old when they made the decision to join their neighbors, the Hanks, Pharisses, Hughes and others and make the long journey from Tennessee to the Mexican state of Texas. They were born in 1785, so they knew the dreams and struggles that had created the United States. But Lorenzo de Zavalls told of the wonderful Mexican state of Texas and the large tracts of free land, and they made the difficult decision to sell their land and go with the group to Texas. Soon after their arrival in 1835, they learned of the growing resistance amount the settlers to the Mexican government and to the rules of the Catholic Church. While the Colwells and their children were clearing land and planting their first crop, the Texas Revolution began, and Texans declared their independence from Mexico. The Mexican government had given William Colwell one-fourth of a league on the Atoyac River on September 25, 1835. Number 480 , and it was surveyed by William McFarland. William Colwell sold that land two years later and received a more generous grant from the Republic of Texas, a geague and labor in Wise County. They were not happy there and soon returned and settled in the Zavalla area, where many of the descendants still live. On October 12, 1858, the Colwell children sold land in Wise County, 3,0d00 acres. Certificate Number 1674-2775, for seven hundred dollars to F. W. Lord and his wife, S. R. Lord. William and Maria Colwell had ten children. l. Wiley F., Forn 1807, married Keziah Hanks, July 12 1827 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Rev. Thomas Hanks and Sarah Hill. Wiley and Keziah lived in Anderson County. Wiliam's and Maria's daughter, 2. Allie was 18 years old when the family arrived in Texas, and she soon met and married Samuel Gilliland. 3. William Jr.'s wife was named Elizabeth. 4, Matthew, born June 26, 1819 married (a) Caroline Worden, Sept. 22, 1846 and (b) Mrs. Martha F. Wallace. Mathew died June 3, 1899. 5. Andrew Jackson, born 1824 in Alabama, married Nancy Harriet Hughes, Feb. 18, 1850. 6. Susan born 1823 in Tenn. married Zachariah C. Johnson. 7. Caroline Elizabeth born 1828 in Tenn. married John McDonald Stovall, Aug. 22, 1844. The youngest Colwell child, 8. George W., born Feb. 7, 1830, married Sarah Cochran. Jan 27, 1853. She was the child of Joshua Butler and Sarah McNeil Cochran. George died March 19, 1859. age 29. Two other children of William and Maria died unmarried. They were 9. Martha and10. Elemuel (Lemuel). The latter died at age 21. William Colwell had a confrontation with Thomas Hanks family, the in-laws of his son, Wiley. On July 23, 1843. Thomas and Wesley Hanks appeared in court in Nacogdoches before Judge Adolphus Sterne and were charged with assault and battery with the intent to kill William Colwell, known as Georgia Colwell. They were placed under a $500.00 bond and ordered to appear at the next district court. Lemuel Colwell had served under Adolphus Sterne in the Texas Revolution, and Maria Colwell hired Sterne to collect Lemuel's military pay in 1851. William Colwell Sr. died in 1849; Maria sold land to Samuel Needham for one thousnad dollars in Stpt. 1849. She died April 13, 1854, and George W. was the executor of her estate.
