Dionysius Oliver was born 1735 at Petersburg, Va. He married Mary Ann Winfrey
in 1758 at Virginia. He established the town of Petersburg, Ga. at the
junction of the Broad and Savanah Rivers in about 1784. Petersburg was the
third largest town in Georgia in 1790 with only Savannah and Augusta larger.
Note: The Old Petersburg town site, for the most part, is under the waters of
Clarks Hill Lake situated within the area of Bobby Brown State Park.
Dionysius died 1808 at Elbert County, Ga. He is buried with his son Peter,
also a Revolutionary War Vet., at the Stinchcomb Methodist Church in Elbert
County, Ga.
He served as a Captain of a Privateer and was with General Lincoln at the
seige of Savannah and Augusta. He fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain in
South Carolina and at the Battle of Kettle Creek in Wilks County, GA. He
served with General Marion and was captured by the British.
He was one of the Grand Jurors of Wilks County, Ga. with George Washington
(signer) and Stephen Head (Chief Executive).
He had ten children by his first wife, Mary Winfrey, and one by his second
wife, Susanna Jackson. The childrens names were:
Peter, John, James, Dionysius, Thomas, William, Eleanor, Florance, Martha,
Frances, and Jackson.
