The Director of the DCWS is Morris Berman, Ph.D., cultural historian, social critic, and the author of five books and nearly forty articles. He has given workshops on critical writing/thinking and on-line research techniques, and teaches nonfiction writing at the university level. His work has been translated into Japanese and several European languages, and he is a recipient of the Governor's Writers Award for Washington State. He is also the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, is listed in Contemporary Authors and other biographical dictionaries and teaches part-time in the Master of Liberal Arts Program at the Johns Hopkins University. Morris Berman's most well-known work is his trilogy on the evolution of human consciousness. Volume 1, The Reenchantment of the World (1981), was widely reviewed, and is regarded as one of the more significant contributions to the discussion of the dilemma of modem Western scientific culture. It is available as a trade paperback from Cornell University Press at 1-800-666-2211. (ISBN 0-8014-9225-4) Volume 2, Coming to Our Senses: Body and Spirit in the Hidden History of the West (1989), is a discussion of the body as the hidden factor in Western religious and cultural history, and was hailed by one reviewer as "one of the most important books that will be written before the third millennium begins." Reprinted by the Seattle Writers' Guild in 1998, it can now be obtained from Book Clearing House at 1-800-431-1579. (ISBN 0-9664168-3-X) Volume 3, Wandering God: A Study in Nomadic Spirituality, explores the phenomenon of "nomadic consciousness" as part of our Paleolithic legacy, and the implications of that mode of being as an alternative to ideology and dogmatism in the 21st century. It is available as a trade paperback from the State University of New York Press at 518.472.5000. (ISBN 0-7914-4442-2) Dr. Berman's study of contemporary American life, The Twilight of American Culture, was published by W.W. Norton in 2000 and is now available in a paperback edition from them at 800.233.4830 (ISBN 0-393-32169-X). "Twilight" was named a New York Times "Notable Book," a "Choice Selection" by the Chicago Tribune, and one of the top ten recommended books of the year by the Christian Science Monitor. In addition to his writing workshops, Dr. Berman also gives workshops (two to five days) based on the above books. "Coming to Our Senses," which has been given across the U.S., Canada, and Australia, explores the impact of the experience of infancy on adult life and social institutions, and the possibilities for healing and creativity. It is primarily an experiential workshop, and is a favorite among artists, teachers, and therapists. "Alternative Visions," which is more theoretical in nature, is designed to map the social and political contours of the 21st century by examining possible scenarios for the next millennium. It reviews the constraints of overpopulation, social inequality, and human nature, and discusses ways in which these might be modified or redirected. Other topics include the emerging biotech interface, the conflict between corporate statism and local autonomy, and shifts in human psychology and perception. |
