The Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation
The Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation (PAOF) was founded 1959 by Dr. Brittain F. Payne, Dr. J. Wesley McKinney, Dr. James H. Allen, Dr. Algernon B. Reese, and Dr. A. Edward Maumenee of the United States to support the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) and its educational programs. The mission of the PAAO is continuing education for ophthalmologists, prevention of blindness, and promotion of scientific and cultural exchange among ophthalmologists of the world. The PAAO provides a forum for professionals from all over the world to gather and focus on ways to standardize and improve ophthalmic knowledge and skills for the improvement of patient care. I. General Grant Requests

Grant requests may be submitted to the PAOF. These projects are in the areas of education, research, and /or community service. The grant request applications are sent to a Review Committee for a rigorous review and the average grant is US$10,000. The maximum of one grant disbursed per year.

II. Visiting Professors Program

The Latin American Affiliated Societies (see list below) have the right to request two Visiting Professors to lecture at their annual congresses: one Visiting Professor from North America and the other from South America.

III. Pan-American Association of Eye Banks (APABO)
The PAOF annually has been supportive of the Pan-American Association of Eye Banks (APABO). APABO's mission is to educate and improve the level of eye banking in Latin America.

IV. Scholarships & Fellowships
The deadline for submission of applications for Scholarships & Fellowships is September 1, except where noted
.

A. Tyson ARVO Travel Scholarship:
Two travel scholarships are awarded to Latin American candidates yearly to attend the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) annual meeting. The candidate must be recommended to the PAAO by ophthalmology department chairmen or national ophthalmological societies affiliated with the PAAO (include two-page CV with your request for information). Applicants should also have submitted a paper or poster to ARVO and should include that information with their application. The deadline for submission of an application for the Tyson ARVO Travel Scholarship is February 15.

B. Basic Sciences Course Scholarships:
1. Andean Course - Biennial Course. Stipend $1,000
2. Puerto Rican Course - Annual. $750
3. Brazilian Course - Annual - $750
4. Southern Cone Course - Annual $750

C
. Named Scholarships:

1. Canqui Boyd Scholarship
- One scholarship per year in the amount of $4,000 is offered biennially (disbursed odd years) to Latin American candidates. Candidates must have already been accepted into a Latin American traning program. This scholarship is offered to supplement study in all areas of subspecialty at institutions in Latin America (applications require letter of application, two-page CV, copy of letter from accepting institution, 3 letters of recommendation: 1) PAAO Active Member, 2) National Ophthalmological Society; 3) Program Director.)

2. William C. Conner Scholarship - One scholarship in the amount of $4,000 is offered biennially (disbursed even years) to Latin American candidates. Candidates must be outstanding students who have presented papers or published during their training period. This scholarship recognizes potential future professors and leaders within the organization. Candidates must have already been accepted into a Latin American training program. Funding provided by the Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation (applications require letter of application, two-page CV, copy of letter from accepting institution, 3 letters of recommendation: 1) PAAO Active Member, 2) National Ophthalmological Society; 3) Program Director.).

3. Paul Kayser International Scholars
- Four two-week scholarships are offered to North American (US and Canadian) candidates for the purpose of introducing exceptional North American ophthalmologists to the best practice and research approaches in Latin America and Canada. Funding provided by Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas.

4. Sean Murphy Scholarship
- One one-year fellowship in the amount of $10,000 (cdn) at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, under the direction of Dr. Miguel Burnier Jr. The selected fellow will participate in various research projects, Grand Round at various hospitals, and have the opportunity to present at the annual ARVO meeting. Matching funding provided by McGill University.

5. Castroviejo Scholarship
- 1-month scholarship per year to study at the Hospital Ramón y Cajal in Madrid, Spain, under the guidance of Dr. Juan Murube del Castillo.

D. Fellowships:

1. Gillingham Fellowship - Two six-month fellowships in the amount of $10,000 each are offered to qualified Latin American candidates in a variety of subspecialty interests at various institutions in the United States and Canada. Candidates must be ECFMG certified. Funding provided by Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas.

2. Whitehead Fellowship
- Two 1- to 2-year fellowships at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio are offered to Latin American candidates in cornea/anterior segment/refractive surgery/neuro-ophthalmology, retina/diabetes, strabismus and glaucoma. Candidates receive a stipend of $18,000 plus benefits and licensing is provided by the institution. Candidates must be ECFMG certified, have a J-1 visa, be bilingual, and have completed a three-year eye residency. Funding provided by the Amor B. and Loddie Lee Whitehead Fellowship Fund in Ophthalmic Research San Antonio, Texas.

E. Observerships (unfunded):

1. Bascom Palmer Pan-American observership. One six-month observership at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida is awarded each year to a qualified Latin American candidate in various subspecialty interests.
