
There are several 'random' elements within this adventure, so it isn't possible to indicate EXACTLY where or when they occur. The best thing to do is follow the procedures, detailed in these preliminary notes, to deal with each problem as and when it arises.
The first Dwarf you meet will throw an ax or small knife at you. It always misses the first time. Ignore the knife but get the ax. From then on, when you meet a Dwarf, throw the ax and take it again. One throw'll usually suffice but you may have to repeat the action.
When you have some treasures the Pirate will rob you. To retrieve them (also the chest, which is itself a necessary treasure) go to the west End of the Hall of Mists. Now follow these directions EXACTLY: south, east, south, south, south, northeast, east, northwest
You will now have found the chest containing your stolen treasure. Take the chest AND your stolen treasures and proceed EXACTLY as follows: southeast, north, down, east, east, Say 'Xyzzy'
You are now back at the Small Brick Building. Deposit the chest and treasure and resume where you left off. The Pirate will not return.
When you are told that the lamp is flickering, it's a warning that the batteries need replacing. Return to the small brick building and Get the Coins. Say 'Plugh' and then 'On Lamp' then proceed EXACTLY as follows: south, south, up, west four times, south, east twice, and Climb
You will now have found the Vending Machine and you should 'DROP COINS'. The machine will dispense new batteries and your lamp is automatically 'recharged'. Now proceed north, up, east four times, down, north twice, and turn Off Lamp, Say 'Plugh'
You are now back at the Small Brick Building. As the coins were a necessary treasure, this procedure will deduct TEN points from your final score! This solution cuts a few unnecessary corners out, and fully utilizes ON/OFF LAMP and the magic words: PLUGH, PLOVER and XYZZY to reduce the chances of needing replacement batteries.
The 'Endgame' will materialize when ALL treasures have been collected and shortly after you are informed that the 'Caves are closing'.
Start at the End of the Road and go east, down. Take Coins, go up. Drop Coins and Take and Examine Lamp. Take Keys and Bottle, and go east, south three times, and Take and Examine Sandwiches. Go west and Fill Bottle. Now go south twice and Examine Grate. Open Grate (using the key - it's now unlocked).
Go north three times, then east and Say Plugh. On Lamp (you are now in the 'Y2' Room). Go south, down, west, down, west four times, and down. Water Plant (the plant grows and asks for more water). Go up, east twice, northeast, east, up, east twice, and down. Fill Bottle and go up, west twice, down, west four times, and down.
Water Plant (it now projects through an opening above you). Go up, east, down, and Fill Bottle (with oil this time). Go up, west, down, and Climb Plant. Go west (note the inscription on the west wall), north. Oil Gate (it creaks open). Drop Bottle and south. Take Eggs and go south, east, up, east twice, northwest (you may have to repeat this until it works).
You should now be in the Oriental Room. Go west, southwest, north, and Cross Bridge (a Huge Troll appears and demands payment). Give Eggs (you'll retrieve them later), and Cross Bridge. The following four inputs will return the eggs to where you first found them!
Go northeast, east, northeast, east, and Take Spices. Go west, south, down twice, In, and Feed Bear (with the sandwiches). Open Chain (using the keys) and Take Bear and Chain. Go Out, up twice, west twice, and Cross Bridge (the greedy Troll appears again!) Throw Bear and Cross Bridge.
Go southwest, down, southeast twice, northeast, east, up, east, up, north, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh (you are now back in the Brick Building).
Drop Chain and Spices. Go west, south three times, down, west, and Take Cage. Turn On Lamp and go west (note the word 'XYZZY' on the wall here), west twice more. Take Bird (in the cage). Go west, down twice, and Free Bird (it scares off the snake!) Drop Cage and go south. Take Jewelry and go north, southwest, west, and Kill Dragon. Yes (You kill the Dragon with your bare hands!) Take Rug and go east twice, north twice, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh
Drop Jewelry and Rug. Say Plugh (back to the 'Y2' Room). Say Plover (You are now in the Plover Room). Go northeast and Take Pyramid. Go south and Say Plover (back to the 'Y2' Room again). Turn On Lamp and go south. Take Bars and go north. Turn Off Lamp and Say Plugh.
Drop Pyramid and Bars. Say Plugh. Turn On Lamp, and go south, down, west, down, west four times, down, and Climb Plant. Go west (there's your eggs!) Go north twice, and Take Trident. Go south twice, and Take Eggs. Go south, east, up, east twice, northeast, east, north, and Open Clam (a pear rolls away out of sight!) Go south, up, east, up, north, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh.
Drop Trident and Eggs. Say Xyzzy (you are now in the Room of Debris). Take Rod and go west three times, down, south, and Take Nugget. Go north, west and Wave Rod (a crystal bridge appears and spans the chasm!) Drop Rod, and go west. Take Diamonds and go east twice, down, north twice, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh.
Drop Diamonds and Nugget. Say Plugh. Turn On Lamp, and go south, down, west, down, east, and Take Gazette. Go east, and Drop Gazette. Go south (repeat until you are back in the Ante Room). Go west twice, northwest (repeat until you move to the Oriental Room). Go north, west, and turn Off Lamp. Drop Lamp, and go east. Take Emerald, and go west. Take Lamp. Turn On Lamp, and go northwest, south, and Take Vase. Go southeast, northeast, east, up, east, up, north, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh.
Drop Emerald, but don't drop the vase yet! Say Plugh. Turn On Lamp, and go south, down, west, down, west twice, east, and Take Pillow. Go west, northeast, east, up, east, up, north, and turn Off Lamp. Say Plugh. Drop Pillow, and Vase, which lands safely on the pillow. Say Plugh.
Turn On Lamp, and go south, down, west, down, north, down twice, and Take Pearl. Go up twice, south, up, east, up, south, north, and south. Now repeat alternate north and south movements until an Elf appears. He is the Warrior who gave you the map to the Colossal Cavern. He then congratulates you and asks you to free his people. You respond "Yes" (the 'Endgame' now materializes, and you are at one end of a Huge Room). Go north, south (there's all sorts of bits and pieces here!)
Take Keys, Lamp, and Dynamite. Turn On Lamp, and go north. Drop Dynamite, and go southwest. Take Rod and Blast (you kill most of the Evil Dwarves and create a new exit to the west!) Go west three times, up five times, east, down, west three times, and Wave Rod (the old bridge trick!)
Go west three times, down three times, and Take Elixir. Turn Off Lamp and Drop Rod. Take Pentacle, and go up three times, east five times, north (lots of skeletons are chained to the wall, here). Drop Elixir (all the skeletons return to life!) Go south, west, north, and Open Chain (to free the Elves). Go south twice, and Open Chain (to free the remaining Elves). Go north, west four times, and Lock Door. Go up four times, east, and a huge blast'll now rock the Dungeon as cold water meets hot lava!
Go north and Take Orb. Go east twice, and Drop Keys. Take Scepter, and go south, west twice (the Spider stares at your pentacle!) West again (it now follows you), up three times, and Throw Pentacle (the Spider follows it into space!) Turn On Lamp and go down three times, east three times, south, and Take Crown. Go west, north, up twice, west five times, and you are now being gently swept along by the stream, your lamp remaining on!
Go up (you are now on the edge of an underground reservoir), south three times, east twice, up, east six times, up, and you receive The Final message: "The Elves are waiting for you in a golden host surrounding their King. They cheer wildly as you emerge into the sunlight"
