Ultima IV: Quest Of The Avatar

General Information:

Get the character reference sheet and the two other documentation files that go with the game and read them!

In terms of setting up your character, nice guys will have an easier time (i.e. the game keeps track of how nice a character you are. So, when answering the set-up questions, keep kindness and honor in mind).

There are people along the way whom may become friends and who'll join your party. You'll need all the friends you can get, but you'll probably soon get tired of talking to every person. Here are the names of the individuals to look for and where to find them. They'll usually be standing with three other people around a fire or something. They may or may not choose to join your party, and it's up to them to decide whether they do so or not.

There are four Energy Barriers: (S)leep, (P)oison, (F)ire, and (L)ightning. Lightning is impassable, the others cast those spells upon the member who's entering. You'll be prompted for which one you want. In casting or dispelling an energy barrier, you must stand next to the spot where you want to cast it.

The Jinx spell will cause a random number of the enemy to fight among themselves. It seems to work best on Gremlins.

The Kill spell won't kill Twisters or Reapers on the first shot. Sometimes other monsters can avoid the kill spell, but these are the ones that do it every time. Tremor is great for a mass kill, it affects all types of enemies!

Quick gives random quickness each turn. Mages seem to benefit most from this spell.

Some sources state that you need more than one item to make the spell (e.g. Quick needs two bloodmoss' to work. This is not always true!

The moon gates work like this. When the gate appears, it stays for two phases of the moon. It'll move you on the first phase to that numbered gate (e.g. if you are at Gate 1 (Moonglow), it'll take you to Gate 8 (Magincia)).

On the second phase it'll take you to the Gate number + one (e.g. if you're in Magincia, you'll go to Moonglow).

Gate Phases Information:

This is from the gate spell. The original author was not sure exactly how the moon gates work, only that they do. One last thing on the moon gates. If you go to the Moonglow Gate and stand on it, when the two moons go dark, search and you'll find the black stone.

Here is a partial listing of towns:

Special towns:
Skara braesells herbs used for spells!
Virtuesells torches, gems, and keys!
Pawssells horses ($100 * members of party.)

It doesn't seem to be particularly useful to regularly meditate at shrines. When you visit the seer, ask him about the virtues. If you're proficient enough in one, he'll tell you to go to it's shrine and meditate for three cycles. Do this and you'll achieve this portion of your avatarhood. As you complete these philosophical achievements, an Ankh will form in the top line of your statistics display. If you do an evil thing, like attacking town guards, you'll loose all but one of your portions (You will have to attack guards at least once.)

The bell of courage is found in the middle of the ocean on a water island.

Secret doors are easily spotted by a little dot (hi-res) in between the brickwork in a wall. You'll be very surprised to see how many there are! Simply walk through the wall with the dot. There're several secret doors in Lord British's castle (guard's room, above healing, prison cell, ...) and in the towns.

Adventure tips:

  1. Getting money quickly may help you get some good armor and better your initial chances of survival. An easy way of getting about $500 is by opening all the chests found in the secret room (guards' room) in Lord British's castle.
  2. Spend money carefully, but don't carry it around. You'll lose it if you die. But you're able to keep your weapon and armor (so invest the $). You can also keep magical ingredients and spells when resurrected. This is a very wise investment and stocks of ingredients and spells should be topped off regularly.
  3. Selling things back to the dealers is a bad idea as they buy it back for one half of the purchase price.
  4. Be careful when fighting thieves, rogues, or pirates as they'll steal your money.
  5. Poison is the most common reason for death. Learn what marshland looks like and avoid it! Remember that you can heal yourself by (h)oling up and camping. To cure (spell C) poison, mix B and C (you have about two cures to start with). Another way to cure poison is to be put to sleep by a trap or magic floor (e.g. the seer in Lord British's castle), or you can always pay $100 to a town healer.
  6. Avoid spiders in dungeons as they'll poison you. Let's not forget the rats, and snakes, which can throw their poison!
  7. Be wary of traps in dungeons in fight mode. You can step somewhere and a wall may open up or fire may spring up, or a bridge might disappear.
  8. While in the towns talk to everyone. After a bit you'll develop a neat knack for spotting the main words in what they say, so you can get everything out of them with little trouble.
    1. Find people to join your party.
    2. Ask people about the runes (there's usually a rune to each town).
    3. Ask people about the mantras (shrines are useless without them).

Assorted Tips:

  1. You may have to win a battle with a water monster before a pirate ship will come by. See if it works. Ships are fun.
  2. Don't risk being sunk by pirate ships. Sail up and kill the crew.
  3. Use horsepower as much as possible (especially after you've been playing awhile), because the game remembers every time you flee from battle. This way you can outrun the enemy rather than have to fight.
  4. If you can't walk through a space (magic square,) then dispel the magic!
  5. You can hole up and camp while in the ocean by just exiting at H. then B. NOTE: If you're ambushed and win the battle, you have to get the chest before you can reboard.
  6. Give blood while at the healers and money to beggars, which can also lead to getting information, as this makes you a nice character.
  7. Don't appropriate chests that aren't yours (sigh) as it will count against you.
  8. When buying spices you can pay only a dollar for them, but that too makes your character appear bad (rotten isn't it?).
  9. Be sure to go down a whirlpool if you get the chance. This is about the only way you can get a boat into the sea in the middle of the continent (and the only way you can get to the city of Cove).
  10. To get a sextant choose option D at the thieves guild ($900). Horses are $100 each (times the number of members in your party).
  11. Sometimes (maybe it was the Origin Systems, Inc.al author's imagination but) you don't see the secret doors (dots) the first time. A peer into a gem or just re-entering the room may clear this up.
  12. The moons will change by themselves (not any relation to commands), so if you're waiting on a moon door, don't just sit there and hit space and repeat, which will advance your number of moves and also give monsters a chance to be born and find you.
  13. If a member of the party is poisoned, one way of fixing him is to let him open all the chests you find. This way he'll have a better chance of getting put to sleep (thus curing the poison). Another neat way, and surer to work is to cast the cure spell at him.
  14. The Bucc's Den weapon shop sells magic bows ($2,000) and wands ($5,000).
  15. Tornados seem to only move you a couple of places and hurt you.
  16. The candle of Love can be found in the township of Cove.
  17. You can find the altar rooms in level 8 by peering at a gem and searching each room.
  18. The secret passage can be found in the chamber of ANKH.
  19. Stones are found in the dungeons at various levels. It seems that you have to have the rune before you can get the stone. They're to be found on the altars, although you may need to peer to see find them. You will need to get them!

Dungeons: Wrong, Shame, Deceit, etc.

There's a secret entrance to the eighth level of dungeons. It's found behind LB's castle. You can try going down to the eighth level through LB's castle and finding a crystal ball to raise you. Then get killed and be revived by LB. You'll lose your money, but everyone is fully healed and you keep your experience and increased statistics.

If a member of your party is dead:

  1. Get $300 from the treasure room in Lord British's castle (if you're poisoned, sleep at seer).
  2. Have the character reincarnated at health.
  3. Have the character's HPS restored by Lord British.
  4. Or just go to Lord British and ask of his health. He'll ask of yours. Say that you're not fine (i.e. "no"). He'll return all characters to full health (and perhaps raise any from the dead as well).
