* Lewis, C.S., The Chronicles of Narnia (Paperback; Boxed Set; Harpercollins, 1994) - Lewis, one of the greatest Christian apologists of our century, reveals his literary genius in these seven books. Children will delight in these stories, which form a sort of allegory of the truths of Scripture. The writing is deep, but easily understood by children. Classics. STATUS: IN PRINT.


* Wangerin, Jr., Walter, The Book of the Dun Cow (Paperback - 256 pp.; Harper, 1989) - Communicates Biblical truths within the context of the classic story of the battle between good and evil. Yes, the animals talk! In fact, the main character is a rooster named Chauntecleer. But the story is profound, and a good read for adults also. In fact, I would suggest that YOU read this to your child if they are below 10 years of age. Trust me - this book was a class project in high school. STATUS: IN PRINT.


* Bunyan, John, The New Pilgrim's Progress (Paperback - 240 pp.; Discovery House, 1989; revised by Warren Wiersbe) - Bunyan's classic allegory telling of the adventures of Christian, updated in modern language by Wiersbe. STATUS: IN PRINT.


* Tolkien, J.R.R., The Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Paperback; Boxed edition; Ballantine Books, 1991) - Tolkien was used of the Lord in the conversion of C.S. Lewis. He was a master storyteller, and created a whole world called "middle earth," in which both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place. This boxed set contains all four books, and can be read by older children or to younger children. STATUS: IN PRINT.


* Leithart, Peter, Wise Words (Paperback - 169 pp.; Holly Hall Pub., 1997) - Christian tales in the tradition of the Brothers Grimm, each story illustrating a Biblical wisdom from the book of Proverbs. From the author: "My intention in Wise Words was to write stories that would appeal to children as stories; that would challenge parents who read to their children; that would illustrate biblical Proverbs; and that would borrow imagery, plots, characters, settings, and themes from the Bible."
