Font Image Library 3.5.7 ($10)
This program helps you keep track of all your fonts. It identifies and loads all of the fonts installed in the system and shows exactly what each font looks like. It also prints out great font sample lists. The program stores a low resolution (screen) image of all your fonts so you can preview them even when they are not loaded. Font Image Library is an outstanding program for anyone who does any publishing, or who just likes to have all of his font information at his fingertips. It is shareware for only $10.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am getting the "Not enough memory to use the painting tools," what can I do?

A few people have reported this problem. I have not been able to recreate it, but it seems it is some sort of third party extension conflict. Every user I have talked to has had success trying the following:

    • Restart the computer while holding down the shift key. This will temporarily turn off all your extensions.
    • Run the Font Image Library again and see if it will load all of your fonts. Once the fonts are loaded, you can restart the computer with your normal extension set.
    • An alternative would be to use the extension manager to turn off all third party extensions, restart the computer, then try the Font Image Library again. I am pretty sure this would work because I have the Font Image Library running on so many different computers which do not exhibit this problem. I think the conflict must be with a third party extension and not with Apple's system software.

NOTE: I have not been able to reproduce this problem with any of the extensions I have loaded, and I use a lot of them. I have hundreds of registered users and only a few people have reported this problem. I would like to find out what exact extension is causing the problem. If you have any guesses, please let me know.

Can I send a foreign check or credit card to pay?
Because I am only charging $10 for the program, my bank won't let me cash foreign checks. If you want to send a credit card number via regular mail, I charge your card for payment. (Please do not send your credit card number over e-mail.) Just make sure to include your Name, Address, Card Type, Number, and Exp. Date.

I am getting the "error, failed to compact stack, disk is full" etc., what do I do?
First, check the obvious. If you are running the program from a disk with less that several megs free - you will get this message. The Font Image Library creates some temporary files while it is open and needs several megs free in order for it to work correctly. However, the program may have become corrupted - perhaps due to a system crash. If this is the case you will need to reinstall the program from the original back up.

I am getting the error - not enough memory to load printer font or painting tools, what do I do?
Disable the extension "menu font". There is an unconfirmed bug that this extension causes problems for my program. If you are not using "menu font", contact me.

If the program does not print a font correctly, what should I do?

Every time I have encountered this problem is was a font problem and not a Font Image Library problem. Fonts seemed to get damaged every once and a while. Here are some simple steps to perform to fix fonts that don't print out right.

  1. Trash the font from your system, reinstall it from the original source.
  2. Run the Font Image Library, trash the image that was previously stored.
  3. Update the library. Now print the font.
  4. Also, check to make sure you have the outline part of the font stored. Both postscript and true type fonts have bit map versions that will not print out very good by themselves. If you are using postscript type 1 fonts make sure you have ATM installed properly.
  5. If the font prints out just fine and dandy in your word processor, but not in the Font Image Library, trash the Font Image Library and reinstall from floppies. If this doesn't work, send me more e-mail.

How do I preview fonts that are not installed in my system?

Right now the Font Image Library can only add fonts to the library that are listed in the Font menu when the Font Image Library is opened. Once images are added to the library, the images stay in the Library until you decide to remove them. Let's say you load a couple hundred fonts into your system and then run the Font Image Library and update it. The 'Library now has images of all those fonts stored away safely. You decide you want to make some more space on your hard drive so you trash 65 of the fonts. You can still use the Font Image Library to preview the 65 fonts you no longer have loaded in your system. In the future, I may add the ability to add fonts to the library even if while they are not installed. I am not sure I am going to be able to get around to it. But if a lot of REGISTERED USERS (hint hint) seem to want this added feature, I might get inspired enough to set aside my other projects and work again on this one.

The program gives my an error message on launching and will not run.
  1. Run Norton Utilities (or something similar) on your hard drive and try again.
  2. Restart your system and hold down the shift key while the computer starts up. This will temporarily disable all your extensions. Try the program again. If the program works, you have an extension conflict. This means that either one of your non-apple extensions is being mean to my program or that one of any of your extensions is corrupted and needs to be replaced.
  3. If none of this works the Font Image Library is probably corrupted. (Several things can cause this like a disk drive problem, or a system crash while the disk drive is spinning, shoving oatmeal in the disk drive slot, etc.) Trash da 'library and reinstall from your back up or original disks.
  4. If none of this works and some of your other programs are acting screwy you might need to reinstall your system. Gee, I hope this is not it. If you are using the latest and the greatest system software that was just released about a week ago, it may mean that my program has not been tested on that system yet. Just keep this in mind.

Is there a limit to the number of fonts you can put in the library?

The only limit is that the list of all the font names must be less than 32,000 characters. At an average of 10 letters per font name, you have a lot of room for a lot of fonts.
