Walking Out the Blues

A city street, a path through the woods, a neighborhood block, a sandy beach, a grassy field, a town park. These are all places that can help us to transform our blue moods into moments of peaceful joy.

The next time you find yourself in a blue mood, stop what you are doing and go outside for an unhurried walk -- a walk that has no destination or goal. Take this walk, not for "getting in your exercise" or any other reason, but just to walk.

In your blue mood you may not want to walk and will find yourself coming up with a hundred and one excuses like, "But I have too much work to do.", "What about my child", or especially "But it's drizzling and gloomy out." Immediately release your excuses. Realize that there are always ways to find time for things that are imporant to you. If you have a child (who may also be gloomy) simply put them on your back. There are few children who will give you a hard time while close to your body. If it is drizzly, simply put on a raincoat. Once you are outside you will be surprised how soon you will release your definition and description of the day. The drizzle, coolness, and lack of sunshine will still help you relax to release your blues and possibly in an even deeper way than the usual and "bright and sunny" days, because through your walk you can access the sun that can never be dampened or drowned by what the world says could invoke "the blues" -- you can find the Sun within yourself.

If you allow yourself to walk farther than just a few yards, you will usually find a 'series' of changes that your body mind and emotions will go through. The changes may occur within just a few steps of your walk, or a couple of miles.

Physiologically, you may start your walk feeling somewhat tight, a bit cool and your breathing may be shallow and erratic. As you move along in a consistent and unhurried pace all of these conditions will be smoothed out until you reach a point where your body no longer inhibits your walk, but actually becomes a seamless vehicle for it.

Psychologically, you will begin your walk with your "blue" mind. Your thoughts will probably contain many of the concearns of your day like your work project, your dinner preparation, or whatever. Often, as you release your worried thoughts you may find them moving from the microcosm to the macrocosm, that is, the progression of your thoughts will move from immediate daily concearns to more long term concearns. Eventually, throughout your walk, you will be able to release these thoughts and concerns and your mind will be free and unencumbered.

Emotionally, as with your physiological and psychological attributes, you will become increasingly calm, cool and collected as you move along. Often, before you reach this easy 'state', you may actually see an increase in your 'emotional aggravation'. This happens simply because your body and your thoughts are both heating up and purging themselves. This is an important stage that needs to be experienced and that will eventually pass. By all means do not try to suppress your emotions, for it will only feed them. Let them come up and out spontaneously, and let them go when they are ready to leave.

At this point, no matter what the weather conditions of your life, you will begin to feel peaceful and possibly euphoric. Each drop of rain, will hold the sun. Each dark cloud will be seen with awe and wonder. Each step you take will be a joyful one. When you return to your door you will feel like you just had a long night's rest.
